Coinbase UK stock trading went live on 6 August, giving eligible retail users phased access to nearly 4,000 US equities inside an app they already use for crypto, funded with GBP or USDC at a fractional minimum of £1.
What Coinbase UK Stock Trading Actually Covers
The catalogue of nearly 4,000 names is roughly half the TechTimes-reported 8,000-plus equities available on Coinbase’s US platform, which launched in February 2026. Trading runs 24 hours a day, five days a week, extending access beyond standard US market hours, though fractional share trading is restricted to normal market hours.
Orders route through Coinbase Capital Markets Corporation and execute via Apex, with shares custodied in the United States by Apex Clearing Corporation, a FINRA-member, self-clearing broker-dealer. The custody location matters for protection purposes: positions are covered by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), not the UK’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). UK investors accustomed to FSCS cover should factor that into their risk assessment.
Purchases funded with GBP carry FX exposure, since US equities are dollar-denominated. Out-of-hours trading carries additional risks, which Coinbase flags in its risk disclosures. Coinbase’s European licences page shows CB Payments Ltd as the regulated entity, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for electronic money and cryptoasset activities under registration number 900635.
The MiFID Licence That Made Equities Possible
The FCA granted Coinbase a MiFID-equivalent investment-services licence in July 2026, according to Tokenist. That authorisation sits on top of its existing e-money licence and crypto registration from February 2025, and it unlocks retail equities alongside perpetual futures across crypto, equities and commodities for professional clients.
Keith Grose, Coinbase’s Regional Managing Director for the UK and Europe, told The Block that the company chose conventional US equities ahead of tokenised stocks to deliver immediate value to UK customers. Tokenised equities remain on the roadmap but will wait on regulatory engagement first.
The FCA has finalised its crypto regulatory framework, with the authorisation gateway expected to open in September and the full regime taking effect in October 2027. Grose said that certainty is what gives Coinbase the confidence to keep building out compliant infrastructure across both the UK and the European Union.
Coinbase UK stock trading fits into a broader product stack that already includes savings accounts and crypto-backed borrowing introduced earlier this year. The company describes the overall direction as its ‘Everything Exchange’ strategy: a single platform handling crypto, equities, commodities, derivatives, lending and payments.
USDC Distribution and the Circle Renewal
Allowing customers to fund equity purchases directly with USDC extends the stablecoin’s reach inside Coinbase’s ecosystem. At the end of Q2 2026, USDC had a circulating supply of $73.3 billion, up 19% year-on-year, according to the Bitcoin Foundation. Around 30% of that supply sat on Coinbase’s platform, with a further 17% on Circle’s own infrastructure.
Circle confirmed during its Q2 2026 earnings call on 5 August that the Coinbase collaboration agreement entered its first three-year renewal term on 18 August 2026 on existing terms, per Stablecoin Insider. The deal extends through 2029. Under it, Coinbase supports USDC distribution and receives a share of reserve income; Blockhead reports that Coinbase has historically taken more than half of Circle’s USDC reserve revenue as a distribution fee. Circle’s total revenues and reserve income reached $701 million in Q2 2026, though the yield on reserves compressed as circulation grew. Circle also confirmed it has no intention to pay quarterly dividends, directing profits toward product development instead.
For UK users, the practical upshot is a tighter loop: USDC held inside Coinbase can now move directly into US equities without touching an external platform. Coinbase One subscribers also earn uncapped rewards on USDC holdings while using the stock service.
The FCA’s authorisation gateway opening in September is the next concrete regulatory checkpoint. Whether Coinbase can convert a first-mover position in crypto-native UK equity trading into durable market share will depend on how quickly the full product set, including derivatives and tokenised assets, follows.
