I initially saw the term “Tongva” on a city bus sign close to Echo Park. Floating there between the Silver Lake and Beverly stops seemed out of place. Later that day, I passed a mural with the same name painted underneath a whirl of birds and clouds. I hesitated, and it lingered in my mind. A name reappears. A name reappears.

Originating in more than 50 communities spanning from what is now the San Fernando Valley to Catalina Island, the Tongva are the indigenous inhabitants of the Los Angeles Basin. They existed before Spanish missions, roads, and even the concept of California as a state. Despite efforts to erase it, that legacy is remarkably resilient and continues to pulsate beneath the city’s tales and concrete.

Reconstructed phonetics, elder memory, and colonial records are being used to meticulously restore the Tongva language, which was once thought to be dormant. Children are already learning terms that their great-grandparents were penalized for using, demonstrating the laborious yet incredibly successful nature of the process. Old sounds are being embraced by a new generation in parks and classrooms.

Pop singer Billie Eilish’s audacious political remark at the Grammys, “Nobody is illegal on stolen land,” caused attention to flare up once more in recent months. Her remarks went viral on social media, but the Tongva’s response exposed more serious conflict. It turns out that her Los Angeles residence is situated right on what was formerly tribal land. The tribe’s professional response emphasized the importance of true engagement and direct acknowledgment.

“We appreciate visibility from public figures,” a spokeswoman stated. “But in order for the public to recognize that this is Gabrieleno Tongva land, it is crucial that the tribe be identified.” It was a really clear feeling, and it was expressed without anger. Just a polite reminder that meaningless platitudes are ineffective.

Later, a law company stepped in and offered to evict Eilish “pro bono” on behalf of the tribe, half in jest. Despite being sensationalized in certain places, the narrative provoked more general discussions about memory, land, and performative activism. The tribe stuck to its message despite the media’s shift in emphasis: awareness is good, but acknowledgment needs to be sustained and personal.

The Tongva have discovered very creative methods to bridge the past and future through smart relationships. How Los Angeles remembers itself is changing as a result of its partnerships with educational institutions, museums, and environmental organizations. The tribe is assisting in spearheading habitat restoration initiatives in areas such as Elysian Park and Baldwin Hills. These are acts of cultural restoration rather than merely conservation initiatives.

Indigenous land ethics are being incorporated into urban development, proving that traditional knowledge is not only applicable but also very effective in addressing today’s environmental issues. Additionally, the ancient wisdom is proving to be both practical and spiritual in a city that is becoming more and more vulnerable to wildfires and droughts.

I went to a storytelling circle that was led by a Tongva elder in Long Beach one late afternoon last spring. There were just around a dozen people in the gathering, seated on folding chairs beneath a pepper tree. He spoke of return rather than loss. He spoke in a calm yet confident tone. You could hear the language settling into the ground like something it had been waiting for when he repeated a chant in Tongva.

Federal recognition is still elusive. Without it, the tribe would not have access to the same resources and protections as other recognized tribes, such as housing, healthcare, and legal status. However, the Tongva still make deeply rooted claims to sovereignty. They are claiming space via teaching, ritual, and stewardship rather than waiting for approval.

The Tongva offer a model for early-stage movements regaining heritage in urban settings: they are assertive, transparent, and elegantly defiant without being boisterous or combative.

The path ahead is not a simple one. Legal disputes still need to be resolved, societal attitudes need to change, and younger generations need to be given cultural fluency tools. Yet with every piece of land returned, every song resurrected, and every school that starts the day by recognizing Tongva land, the groundwork is already being established.

The Tongva are securing something deeper beneath the city as it keeps growing upward and outward, something that hasn’t yet been destroyed by time or development. A silent comeback. An ongoing story.
