Renowned Hollywood star Matt Damon recently disclosed the intriguing tale of how he embarked on developing a crypto advertisement called “Fortune Favors the Brave” alongside Crypto.com. Unfortunately, after the said commercial’s release, Damon faced a barrage of backlash and negative feedback from people worldwide regarding his participation in it.

In an interview with the Associated Press, renowned actor and producer Matt Damon recently revealed how he became involved in creating a cryptocurrency advertisement with Crypto.com. 

Damon, who has starred in several blockbuster movies such as Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan, and the Bourne franchise, shared that he did the commercial to raise money for his global nonprofit organization Water.org. Damon gave his entire salary for the advertisement to Water.org, which caught the attention of Crypto.com, which donated $1 million to the foundation.

Despite the charitable purpose behind the commercial, it still faced criticism from some quarters. Critics argued that it presented cryptocurrency as a straightforward and secure means of earning money, which was misleading. Others pointed out that investing in an unstable and unregulated market like cryptocurrency could be risky. Furthermore, some speculated that Damon was involved in the advertisement only for profit and did not genuinely believe in the benefits of cryptocurrency.

Notably, according to data consulting firm Kantar, several cryptocurrency firms aggressively promoted their businesses in 2021 and 2022, with a combined spending of $39 million on Super Bowl spots. Among the crypto firms with commercials featuring celebrities was the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX, which featured Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen.

Damon’s cryptocurrency advertisement, “Fortune Favors the Brave,” was directed by Oscar-winner Wally Pfister and released in October 2021. Although the commercial faced some criticism, it also generated interest and sparked conversations about the growing significance of cryptocurrency in the global economy.

Water.org, co-founded by Damon, aims to provide safe water and sanitation to people in need worldwide. Crypto.com’s donation to the foundation demonstrates the potential for cryptocurrency to contribute to social and philanthropic causes. Damon expressed his gratitude to the company for its generous donation to his foundation.
